Today, the new assistance for our mobile learning activities has arrived. To ensure the sustainable tradition of Pediaphon and to continue the great exhibition habits of Dr. Andreas Bischoff with his RS Media Robosapien, we took a WowWee Femisapien into the team. She will join us at the CeBIT 2010, so you can see her live in hall 9 at booth D 06 (FernUniversität in Hagen/Innovation NRW).

But we are still looking for a name for our new team mate… first proposals are Carry or Sandy, but we have not yet decided. Do you have any cool name suggestions?

Heute ist bei uns die neue Unterstützung für unsere Mobile Learning Aktivitäten angekommen. Um die nachhaltige Überlieferung von Pediaphon zu sichern und in guter Tradition die Messeauftritte von Dr. Andreas Bischoff mit seinen RS Media Robosapien fortzuführen, haben wir einen Femisapien von WowWee in das Team geholt. Sie wird mit uns auf der CeBIT 2010 sein, so dass ihr sie live in Halle 9 auf dem Stand D 06 (FernUniversität in Hagen/Innovation NRW) sehen könnt.

Wir suchen aber noch einen Namen für unser neues Teammitglied… erste Vorschläge sind Carry oder Sandy, aber festgelegt haben wir uns noch nicht. Habt ihr irgendwelche coole Namensvorschläge?

Int. Leitmesse für professionelle Bildung, Lernen und IT

Wie die letzten sieben Jahre zuvor, war ich auch dieses Jahr in Karlsruhe auf der Learntec unterwegs. Auf dem Gemeinschaftsstand der FernUniversität in Hagen hat unsere Forschungsgruppe Mobile Learning das Verbundprojekt “Mobile Learning – prozessorientiertes Informieren und Lernen in wechselnden Arbeitsumgebungen” präsentiert. Ich war nur heute auf der Messe, habe aber gehört, dass die diesjährige Learntec in den beiden ersten Tagen gut besucht war und unser Team viele gute Gespräche führen konnte. Interessante Gespräche haben sich auch für mich am Nachmittag ergeben – beispielsweise mit André Müller (Deutsche Welle), Michaela Kudlich (Deutsche Börse) und Stefan Bleses (Motif GmbH). Zudem hatte ich endlich die Gelegenheit Volker Kunze von der Know How! AG persönlich kennenzulernen, der unsere Xing-Gruppe “Mobile Learning” co-moderiert.

Aber der Tag fing schon im Shuttle-Bus vom Bahnhof zum Messegelände gut an. Per Zufall hatte sich Prof. Dr. Rolf Schulmeister neben mir gesetzt und wir kamen ins Gespräch über die Learntec an sich und über Mobile Learning im Ausland. Ihn hatte ich später auch im Kongress getroffen, wo ich mir zunächst das von Dr. Jochen Robes vom Weiterbildungsblog moderierte Forum “Twitter: Kann man mit 140 Zeichen lernen?” anschaute. Prof. Dr. Andrea Back (University of St. Gallen) referierte in ihrem Vortrag “Twitter – Begegnung mit altbekannten Lernsituationen” über ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen mit twitter und der Nutzung von TweetDeck. Das Publikum hatte aber mehrfach kritisch nachgefragt, ob das Ganze wirklich zum Lernen geeignet sei. Auch Martin Raske (Credit Suisse) berichtete im anschließenden Vortrag “@twitter #elearning – Wenn E-Learning-Profis twittern” sehr unterhaltsam über seine persönlichen twitter-Aktivitäten. Seinen Berichten nach, gibt es zunächst einige Hürden zu meistern; z.B. das die eigene Informatikabteilung Web 2.0-Dienste blockiert, so dass man am Arbeitsplatzrechner “site restricted” sieht, wenn man www.twitter.com aufruft. Aber mit dem Fazit “twitter ist cool” ist er überzeugt, dass in den nächsten Jahren solche Web 2.0-Dienste im beruflichen Alltag zur Selbstverständlichkeit werden. Das Forum endete mit einem Vortrag zu “Microblogging in Higher Education” (Blog/Audioaufnahme) von Dr. Martin Ebner (Technische Universität Graz) und Dr. Sandra Schaffert (Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft), in dem beide verschiedene Studien zu Microblogging an Hochschulen präsentierten und daraus Empfehlungen für die Nutzung von Microblogging in der Lehre ableiteten.

Und natürlich war es auch schön “alte” Bekannte von der FernUniversität in Hagen zu treffen, wie Dr. Andreas Bischoff, Dr. Markus Deimann, Bernd Müller und andere.  Andreas hat wie immer mit seinem Projekt “Pediaphon” und dem Robosapien RS-Media auf der Messe geglänzt und eine Reihe an Interviews gegeben; unter anderen beim Deutschlandradio. Als Anregung habe ich heute mitgenommen, dass wir unser Thema “Mobile Learning” für die Menschen erlebbarer gestalten sollten. Erste Ideen sind schon da, warte noch auf Feedback von Andreas – lass euch überraschen, was wir auf der CeBIT zeigen werden :o)

Der Tag ist so schnell vorbeigegangen, so dass ich leider keine Zeit mehr fand, mich noch mit weiteren “alten” Bekannten auszutauschen, wie beispielsweise Christian Bablick (create mediadesign GmbH) oder Dr. Werner Kohn (VIWIS GmbH), die vor Ort waren, sowie mir die vielen Messestände in Ruhe anzuschauen. Ein paar Eindrücke von der Messe hat Bernd Müller, unser Medienbeauftragter am Fakultät für Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften, in drei Bilderstrecken zusammengestellt; Bilder vom 1ten Messetag, Bilder vom 2ten Messetag und Bilder vom 3ten Messetag. Best practice in podcasting

By invitation from Dr. Olaf Zawacki-Richter, today Dr. Palitha Edirisingha, a lecturer in E-Learning at Beyond Distance Research Alliance, University of Leicester (UK), visited the University of Hagen. In the afternoons he hold a lecture on “Podcasting, Mobile Learning and Second Life: Some Pedagogical Applications to Support Student Learning in Higher Education”. Palitha Edirisingha spoke about how to best design podcasts in courses, based on his operating experiences that he also wrote about in a book with Gilly Salmon about “Podcasting for Learning in Universities“. Later on he showed us a live demo on their projects in Second Life, but unfortunately didn’t have the time to tell us more about his mobile learning project called WoLF.

Exchange of experiences on M-Learning

The Mobile Learning Day 2009 on the 19th of November 2009 at the University of Hagen (FernUniversität in Hagen) was the second successful conference on the topic of Mobile Learning. The event addressed the scientific community as well as people from the area of e-learning and advanced vocational training. This year, the event focus – with all of its lectures, panel discussions, workshops  and the exhibition – on three topics; ‘M-Learning in Academia’, ‘M-Learning in the Industry’ and ‘International Projects on M-Learning’. The Research Group Mobile Learning was glad to welcome over 100 guests and pleased with the active support by the ten exhibitors in the Mobile Learning Exhibition.

After being welcomed by Prof. Dr. Claudia de Witt (University of Hagen) and Peter Krauss-Hoffmann (Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), Prof. Dr.Nicola Döring (University of Ilmenau) hold a keynote on the state of research and development of Mobile Learning in higher education. Prof. Dr. Marcus Specht (Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies) then gave a visionary view of various applications outside the university and introduced the initiative CELSTEC.org. In contrast to that, Dr. Martina Henn-Sax (tutor2go) reported in her presentation about experiences with Mobile Learning in the high-school. In the following discussion with the speakers, Prof. Dr. Bettina Harriehausen-Mühlbauer (University of Darmstadt) and Dr. Annabell Preußler (University of Duisburg-Essen) there was a debate about the differences between Mobile Learning and other forms of learning, but also about the dangers of permanent learning compulsion.

In the afternoon, Dr. Matthias Kose (mobilinga GmbH) opened the second topic block, with a focus on mobile learning offers in job-related use. In his keynote speech, he spoke about technical trends in the field of mobile technologies and showed the audience several case studies, e.g. location based supplement in history courses. In the subsequent presentation Ferdal Özcelik (BGAG/DGUV) reported first results from a joint project on Mobile Learning in the logistics industry. David Penkert (digital publishing AG) had a little bit different perspective on the topic of Mobile Learning; in his lecture he presented the possibilities of learning applications on USB sticks. At the end the audience discussed with the speakers, Reinhard Müller (KaSyX GmbH & Co. KG) and Uwe Weinreich (Weinreich GmbH) about (usage) costs of mobile learning applications and the technical feasibility of some future learning scenarios for mobile devices.

The thematically varied event closed with three parallel workshops, where participants had the possibility to deal more intensively with certain topics and to connect with other like-minded people. In the workshop ‘Mobile Learning in Academia’ the group discussed together with Dr. Andreas Bischoff (University of Hagen) about the dangers of mobile social networks and the location possibility of mobile devices. The workshop hosted by Oliver Pincus (afelio GmbH) on ‘Mobile Learning in the Industry’ dealt with the questions for whom Mobile Learning is meaningful and how to get Mobile Learning offers profitability, against the background of the development costs. In the third and by Prof. Dr. Marcus Specht (Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies) conducted workshop on ‘International Projects on Mobile Learning’ the group spoke about international standards for Mobile Education and about the cultural differences in learning habits from country to country.

The event series “Mobile Learning Day” will be continued and expanded in 2010. On the 3rd and 4th of November 2010 once again experts and interested parties will meet to exchange on current trends in Mobile Learning and to discuss mobile technology and education offerings. In addition to the mobile learning projects at universities and in industry, there will also be a focus on mobile learning applications in schools and the specific (learning) characteristics in the target group of young people. In the accompanying exhibition and as participators in various workshops and smaller working groups, the guests can discuss specific subjects in more depth and share experiences.

Pupils explain where to learn with the cell phone

Today I got positive surprised by a short video (in German) about “What is Mobile Learning“. In a school project at the “Berufliche Schule Uferstraße” in Hamburg the pupils made this great movie with everyday situations in which you can use Mobile Learning. This school seems to be deep into mobile technologies in the class education, because they also work with QR-Codes, Bluetooth and podcasts. But now just enjoy the “What is Mobile Learning” Video.

Further development of E- towards M-Learning

Educate oneself instead of reading newspaper: How can a truck driver meaningful use queue time for professional qualification, is one of questions of the joint research project „Mobile Learning – prozessorientiertes Informieren und Lernen in wechselnden Arbeitsumgebungen“, which is coordinated and scientifically supported by experts from the University of Hagen (FernUniversität in Hagen). The work at the University is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with almost 350.000 Euros. Also Daimler AG and the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) participate in this three-year joint research project.

Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Claudia de Witt, Chair of Educational Science and Media Education, the Hagener Mobile Learning Research Group is taking care of the project management, develops didactical scenarios in co-operation with the other partners and evaluates the results.

Die 5te Mobile Learning Arena

Heute hat Learntec 2009 ihre Pforten für die Besucher geöffnet und ich wollte es mir nicht entgehen lassen, einige ‘alte’ Bekannte aus dem Bildungssektor wieder zu treffen. Und da ich freundlicherweise noch eine Freikarte von Sandro Mengel (FernUniversität in Hagen) bekommen hatte, habe ich mich auf dem Weg nach Karlsruhe gemacht. Zudem war ich auch auf das Vortragsprogramm in der Mobile Learning Arena sehr gespannt, da ich in der Vorankündigung einige mir bis jetzt unbekannte Namen sah:

Oliver Pincus (afelio GmbH) hat als erster Referent über sein Produkt namens mooleemoo.de gesprochen. Mit dieser Softwarelösung kann man anhand von Vorlagen Lernmodule für Mobiltelefone erstellen, was und vor allem bei dem Hinweis “der Editor erstellt automatisch eine JAD/JAR-Datei für das Handy” mich ein wenig an unserem Mobile Learning Maker aus dem Jahr 2006 erinnert. Allerdings hat Oliver noch zusätzlich eine Ausgabe für iPod geschaffen, welche er am Beispiel eines “Glossars” dem Publikum zeigte.

Anschließend wurde ein Vortrag von Giunti Labs mit dem Titel “Innovate to Compete – New Generation Mobile Enterprise Learning” mit Praxisbeispielen zu “Museum Based Art Education” und “Maintainance Training & Support in Automotive & Avionics” geboten. Der Referent sprach vor allem über eXact Mobile – eine ‘mobile’ Erweiterung des Autorensystems namens learn eXact LCMS aus dem Hause Giunti Labs – und den damit erstellbaren kleinen Lernmodule bzw. “content pills” für Mobiltelefone.

In seinem Vortrag “Mobiles Sprachlernen in der iPhone-Ära mit mobilinga” hat Dr. Matthias Kose (mobilinga GmbH) hat sein neues Produkt anhand eines Video demonstriert. Neben den Lernangeboten zum ‘Sprache lernen’ sollen demnächst noch weitere Produkte mit Fokus auf ‘Fakten lernen’ von der mobilinga GmbH auf dem Markt gebracht werden – einen Vorgeschmack darauf bittet schon beispielweise der Einbürgerungstest für das Mobiltelefon.

Der Vortrag von Heike Ernst (know how AG) mit dem Titel “Über die Konzeption, den Einsatz und die Evaluation einer Handy-Lernanwendung für den Englischunterricht der Klassenstufe 8″ beschäftigte sich mit dem Mobilen Lernen als Ergänzung zum traditionellen Unterricht an dem Gymnasium ‚Am Markt‘ in Hettstedt. Sie hat die Ergebnisse ihres Projektes vorgestellt, das im Rahmen einer Diplomarbeit in 2007 entstanden war. Abgesehen davon, dass ich zum ersten Mal einen Vortrag zu Mobile Learning aus Sicht der Lernenden gehört habe, war ich positiv überrascht als plötzlich das Peperoni-Logo auf mehreren Folien auftauchte: Heike hatte für ihre Studie unseren Mobile Learning Maker genutzt :o)

Sonja Hild (digital publishing AG) sprach in ihrer Präsentation “Lernen, wann und wo ich will. Weltweit Sprachen lernen mit digital publishing” worauf es beim Lernen von Sprachen ankommt. Ein interessanter im Vortrag angesprochener Aspekt war die Bedeutung der Messbarkeit vom Lernerfolg in der Wirtschaft, da mit Bildungsmaßnahmen oft Boni und Beförderungen zusammenhängen. In der Vortragsreihe war es zudem ein Highlight zu hören, dass “Mobile Learning” auch ganz ohne Mobiltelefone verstanden werden kann. Das vorgestellte Produkt “Sprachkurs für die Hosentasche” ist ein USB-Stick, den man an jedem beliebigen PC ‘unterwegs’ anschließen kann. Lustiger weise war ich bereit in 2004 mit Jörg Koberling, Freddy Ertl und Beate Gallist von der digital publishing AG zum Thema ‘unterwegs Lernen’ im Gespräch, allerdings damals mit dem Fokus auf Mobiltelefone.

Das iPhone stand auch im Vortrag “Best practice im Mobile Learning – Lectora 9 goes iPhone” von Mario Rümmler (chemmedia AG) im Mittelpunkt. Auch wenn das iPhone unter den Mobiltelefonen einen beachtlichen Sprung hinsichtlich Benutzerführung und Funktionalität gemacht hat, sind nach wie vor die bisherigen didaktischen Aspekte auch bei diesem Gerät zu beachten; beispielweise kurze Texte, kleine aber ausdrucksstarke Bilder und eingeschränkte Verwendung von Ton.

Im letzten Vortrag “Lectures, Training and Tutorials for Mobile Devices” erörterte Troy Stein (TechSmith) die Erstellung von mobilen Lernmodule aus der Aufzeichnung von Präsentation. Leider hatte die Live-Demonstration nicht gänzlich funktioniert, so dass die Zuhörer das fertige Lernmodul für das Mobiltelefon nicht mehr sehen konnten.

Some days ago we have started a Mobile Learning Discussion Group at the Business Network called xing.com. This group was opened on the 6th October 2008 and as one of the group moderatos I glad that today we already have 142 members. This platform is for information and exchange of industry experts and interested persons who deal with a topic of Mobile Learning. In several forums the participants debate about ideas, challenges, experiences, products and services. Our Xing Mobile Learning Discussion Group is also a place to find cooperation partners for projects and to be up to date on topic relevant dates and events. Mobile Learning Workshop at Personalkongress

I was invited to hold a workshop on Mobile Learning in the health care’ (Mobile Learning in Gesundheitswesen – Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Mobilfunktechnologien in der Personalentwicklung) within the Personalkongress 2008 – Kliniken im Umbruch, Herausforderung Personalmanagement, which was organised by the Hannover Medical School (MHH). I thought I wouldn’t meet any friends, because I am not really into the field of health care and the target audience was medical professions, but I found one face that I knew; Prof. Dr. Herbert Matthies, who I met two years ago on Learntec. This day he was speaking about ‘eLearning in der Praxis – Beispiele für erfolgreiche PPP-Projekte der MHH mit Wissenschaftsverlagen’.

This year, for the first time, I was at the Learntec as a visitor and not as an exhibitor. I got a free ticket from Andreas Bischoff (the man behind pediaphon), so I just couldn’t resist to stop by for some hours. I visited the FernUniversität booth and the Mobile Learning Arena. It was nice to meet some ‘old’ Mobile Learning friends like Oliver Pincus from afelio GmbH, Karsten Meier from Handylearn Projects as well as Uwe Weinreich and Nadine Hüllbrock from Mobile Coaching - Weinreich UB GmbH. I definitely have to intensify my work at the Mobile Education Center of Excellence on Microlearning and Mobile Learning :o)
